Pool equipment is one of the few big-ticket home purchases where the store you buy from changes the manufacturer’s warranty. Not the store’s own return policy. The actual manufacturer coverage. Two pumps with the same motor, impeller and controls can come with very different protection depending on the SKU on the box and whether it came from a website or a counter.

Most buying guides skip this. We’re putting it first, because it should shape every pump, heater, filter and salt system decision you make.

The short version

Hayward: Expert Line vs Open Line

Hayward splits its equipment into channels, and its warranty page lays them out plainly:

  • Expert Line: approved for sale only through brick-and-mortar locations. These qualify for parts and labor coverage.
  • Hayward Rewards warranty: Rewards dealers can offer extended coverage when you buy one or more Expert Line products from them.
  • Open Line: approved for sale online and in stores. That includes W3 model numbers, replacement parts, “white goods” and accessories. For in-ground equipment, Open Line coverage is one year, parts only, with no labor. Hayward notes two exceptions in the table: salt chlorination cells get three years parts only, and TracVac cleaners get two years parts only.

One line in Hayward’s terms is worth reading twice: Open Line coverage for in-ground products “does not increase” when sold through a store, sold by a Rewards dealer, or installed by a professional. In other words, a W3 pump is a W3 pump. Paying a pro to install it doesn’t upgrade it to Expert Line coverage.

How to tell which one you’re looking at

Look at the model number. Hayward’s own product Q&A for the Super Pump VS answers this directly: the W3SP2603VSP is the version available online with a one-year parts-only warranty, while the non-W3 version is sold only through authorized retail stores and comes with three years parts and one year labor.

So when you’re comparing a Hayward pump online against a quote from a local dealer, you’re often not comparing the same warranty, even if the photos look identical. Write down both model numbers.

Unauthorized sellers

Hayward also says its warranty applies only to products bought from Hayward or Hayward-authorized sellers, and that it may reject claims on products from unauthorized sellers, including unauthorized internet sites. A suspiciously cheap marketplace listing for an Expert Line SKU is the scenario to worry about: you may be paying for a warranty you don’t actually have.

Pentair: the e-commerce warranty

Pentair’s homeowner warranty page sets out several tiers. The ones that matter for online shoppers:

  • E-commerce warranty, 1 year minimum, parts only. Products bought from the internet, including Authorized Pentair Online Resellers, get one year of parts-only coverage starting from the purchase date. Pentair lists IntelliFlo SVRS variable-speed pumps as an exception with two years parts only.
  • No labor on internet purchases. Pentair’s page says labor is not covered for internet purchases (or for above-ground systems, maintenance equipment, or in-floor systems).
  • No bundle. The three-year bundle warranty (parts and labor on qualifying equipment bought on one invoice and installed at the same home) “does not apply to products purchased from the internet or online resellers.”
  • TradeGrade products must be bought from a store, pool builder or pool service company. Pentair’s registration card says that if a TradeGrade product is bought online, it gets only a 60-day limited warranty.

For brick-and-mortar purchases, Pentair’s standard is a minimum of one year parts and labor when professionally installed, with longer terms on many products. A product that requires professional installation but isn’t professionally installed drops to one year parts only.

To get any extended Pentair coverage you need to register the product and keep the sales receipt, and for many products, the installer’s invoice too. Do it the week the equipment goes in, not the week it fails.

IntelliChlor: do not mix the two warranty tables

Pentair’s current page lists IntelliChlor without a Power Center at two years in its product table, but its separate e-commerce table gives online purchases one year, parts only. Only IntelliFlo SVRS pumps are listed as a two-year online exception. Our October 20, 2026 recheck of the EC-520555 IC40 listings at ePoolSupply and In The Swim also found one-year terms. Older search snippets describing a two-year online IntelliChlor exception are not a substitute for current terms. See the IC40 warranty explanation in our salt-system guide and get any promised extra coverage in writing before buying.

What “EC-” means on Pentair part numbers

Many Pentair items sold online carry an EC- prefix (for example, the SuperFlo VST shows up as EC-342001). Online retailers commonly describe EC products as the e-commerce versions covered by the one-year parts-only e-commerce warranty. Treat EC- as a signal to read the warranty terms, the same way you’d treat W3 on a Hayward box.

Jandy: essentially no internet warranty

Jandy (part of Fluidra, alongside Zodiac and Polaris) took the hardest line. Starting January 1, 2019, the company moved its Jandy Pro Series equipment to “Trade Series Exclusive” status and announced it would not warranty those products when bought online.

The manufacturer-hosted Jandy limited warranty PDF (H0333803 Rev Y), read alongside Jandy’s current support policy, says it does not apply to Jandy-branded products purchased through the internet or other e-commerce platforms, except Jandy valves smaller than three inches, parts, and pool accessories. It also says the warranty applies only to products installed and serviced by a contractor who is licensed and qualified in pool equipment where such requirements exist, or by an experienced pool professional where they don’t.

If you want a Jandy pump, heater, salt system or controller with a manufacturer warranty, buy it through a dealer or pool professional and confirm the exact model’s terms.

Do not assume dealer purchase includes labor. The cited Jandy standard warranty explicitly excludes labor costs to service or repair a defective product. A dealer may offer separate coverage, but ask for it in writing. The PDF is marked ©2020, Rev Y; Jandy’s current support page confirms the online-purchase restriction, not that every model’s term is unchanged. Request the warranty supplied with your specific equipment before paying.

Robots work differently

Robotic cleaners mostly sell direct-to-consumer, and their warranties follow the brand rather than the channel. That doesn’t mean “anywhere goes”:

  • Maytronics (Dolphin) runs an authorized-dealer program and requires any business selling Dolphins online to sign an Authorized Online Seller agreement. Some Dolphin models are brick-and-mortar only. Buy from Maytronics or an authorized reseller.
  • Aiper says its US warranty claim form is “exclusively for products purchased through Aiper official channels and authorized channels,” and asks for proof of purchase. Coverage is restricted to the country where the robot was received.
  • Beatbot advertises a three-year full-replacement warranty on its current robots bought through beatbot.com.

The pattern is the same as with pumps: an unauthorized marketplace listing can leave you with a robot and no warranty.

When buying online is still the right call

We’re not telling you never to buy pool equipment online. There are good reasons to:

  • You install and service your own equipment. If you were never going to pay for labor, losing labor coverage costs you nothing. One year of parts-only coverage may be acceptable on a pump you’re comfortable swapping a motor or drive on yourself.
  • The price gap is big. Get the dealer’s installed quote and the online price, then subtract the online price from the dealer’s equipment price. If that difference is bigger than what you’d expect to pay for a service call and labor during the first year or two, online wins on paper.
  • It’s a wear part or accessory. Baskets, o-rings, cartridges, lids and valves are commonly Open Line or parts-category items anyway. You lose little by buying them online.
  • It’s a robot from the brand’s own store. Robot warranties generally don’t depend on a dealer.

And there are good reasons not to:

  • A pro is installing it. If someone else is doing the work, buying the Expert Line or dealer version usually gets you labor coverage for a year or more, plus somebody local who’s on the hook.
  • It’s Jandy. There’s effectively no online warranty to have.
  • It’s a heater or a complex system. Gas heaters, heat pumps and automation systems involve gas, high-voltage wiring and permits. Those are the jobs where both labor coverage and pro installation matter most.

Buying online: pros

  • Often a lower sticker price
  • Wide selection and fast shipping
  • Fine for parts, accessories and wear items
  • Robot warranties usually don’t depend on a dealer

Buying online: cons

  • Hayward Open Line and Pentair e-commerce coverage is parts only, no labor
  • Pentair online purchases can’t get the 3-year bundle
  • Jandy equipment bought online has no manufacturer warranty
  • Unauthorized sellers can leave you with no coverage at all

Texas-specific things that void warranties anyway

Read the exclusions, not just the term length. Two show up in every major manufacturer’s fine print and matter more in Texas than most places:

Freeze damage. Pentair’s general terms list “damage caused by water freezing inside the product” as a reason to deny a claim. Hayward’s salt system manual warns that the cell and flow switch “will be damaged by freezing water just as your pool plumbing would.” A cracked pump housing or split filter tank after a hard freeze is generally your cost, not the manufacturer’s, no matter where you bought it. Freeze protection (running the pump, or properly draining equipment if power is out) is your job.

Water chemistry. Pentair lists “failure to maintain water chemistry in conformity with the standards of the swimming pool industry for any length of time” as grounds for denial. CircuPool’s salt-system warranty excludes damage from improper pool chemistry too. In hard-water parts of Texas, scaled heater exchangers and salt cells are a common way to run into this. Keep your test results. A log on your phone is enough.

A buying checklist

Before you buy any pump, heater, filter or salt system:

  1. Write down the exact model number you’re being quoted, online and at the dealer. Look for W3 (Hayward) and EC- (Pentair).
  2. Ask the dealer what coverage their SKU carries, parts and labor, and in writing.
  3. Check that the online seller is authorized. Hayward, Pentair and Maytronics all reference authorized sellers. When in doubt, ask the manufacturer.
  4. Decide who’s doing the labor for the next three years. That decides whether labor coverage is worth anything to you.
  5. Register the product within the window the manufacturer requires and save the receipt and installer invoice.
  6. Keep a water-chemistry log and a freeze plan.

If you’re shopping pumps right now, our variable-speed pump guide flags which SKUs are the online versions, and our Hayward Super Pump VS vs Pentair SuperFlo VST comparison walks through the warranty difference model by model. Salt systems have the same issue. See salt chlorine generators for Texas.

Bottom line: buying online is fine when you’re doing the labor yourself and the savings are real. If a pro is installing it, or it’s Jandy, compare a dealer purchase and ask whether labor is included; Jandy’s cited standard warranty excludes it. Get any separate labor coverage in writing. Either way, check the model number before you pay.

FAQ

Does buying a Hayward pump online void the warranty?

Not if you buy an Open Line product (model numbers starting with W3) from an authorized seller. Those carry Hayward's Open Line warranty, which for in-ground equipment is 1 year, parts only, with no labor. Expert Line products are approved only for brick-and-mortar sale, and Hayward says it may reject claims on products bought from unauthorized sellers, including unauthorized internet sites.

What warranty does Pentair give on equipment bought online?

Pentair's published e-commerce warranty is one year, parts only, from the date of purchase, even from an Authorized Pentair Online Reseller. Pentair lists IntelliFlo SVRS pumps as an exception at two years parts only. Online purchases are not eligible for Pentair's three-year bundle warranty, and labor is not covered for internet purchases. You must register the product and provide the receipt.

Can I buy Jandy equipment online with a warranty?

Generally no. Jandy's limited warranty states it does not apply to Jandy-branded products bought through the internet or other e-commerce platforms, except Jandy valves under three inches, parts, and pool accessories. It also requires installation and service by a qualified or licensed professional.

Is the cheaper online price worth losing labor coverage?

It depends on whether you would pay for labor anyway. If you install and service your own equipment and the online price is meaningfully lower, a parts-only warranty may be fine. If a pro installs it, a dealer purchase often includes labor coverage for the first year or more, and that labor can easily cost more than the price difference on a single warranty call.

What is a W3 model number?

On Hayward equipment, a W3 prefix marks an Open Line SKU that Hayward approves for online sale. The same pump without the W3 prefix is typically the Expert Line version sold through stores and dealers with longer parts coverage plus labor.
